Density waves in the inner parts of disk galaxies

چکیده

Density waves in the central kpc of galaxies, taking the form of spirals, bars and/or lopsided density distributions, are potential actors of the redistribution of angular momentum. They may thus play an important role in the overall evolution of the central structures, not mentioning the possible link with the active/non-active central mass concentration. I present here some evidence for the presence of such structures, and discuss their importance in the context of dynamical evolution.

High-Resolution Rotation Curves of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies.

High-resolution Halpha rotation curves are presented for five low surface brightness galaxies. These Halpha rotation curves have shapes different from those previously derived from H i observations, probably because of the higher spatial resolution of the Halpha observations. The Halpha rotation curves rise more steeply in the inner parts than the H i rotation curves, and they reach a flat part...

Resonance Excitation and the Spiral-ring Structure of Disk Galaxies

Rings are common in disk galaxies. These rings are either indistinguishable from a pair of tightly wound spirals, or themselves are a part of the spiral structure. Furthermore, their occurrence is seen coincident with a bar in the center. In this paper, we interpret this spiral-ring structure as density waves resonantly excited by a rotating bar potential. The theory gives excellent agreement f...

Dynamical Constraints on Disk Masses

While the total interior mass of a galaxy is reasonably well determined by a good rotation curve, the relative contributions from disk, bulge and halo are only weakly constrained by one-dimensional data. Barred galaxies are intrinsically more complicated, but provide much tighter constraints on the disk masses and support the idea that most of the mass in the inner parts of bright galaxies is i...

The Bar-Halo Interaction in SB Galaxies

We describe fully self-consistent N-body experiments of barred galaxies with massive halos. A rotating bar is braked through dynamical friction with the halo, which occurs on a short time scale when the central density of the halo is high. On the other hand, friction is weak in a model with a central halo density low enough that the disk dominates the rotation curve in the inner parts; this mod...

Density Waves Inside Inner Lindblad Resonance: Nuclear Spirals in Disk Galaxies

We analyze formation of grand-design two-arm spiral structure in the nuclear regions of disk galaxies. Such morphology has been recently detected in a number of objects using high-resolution near-infrared observations. Motivated by the observed (1) continuity between the nuclear and kpc-scale spiral structures, and by (2) low arm-interarm contrast, we apply the density wave theory to explain th...
